POSITION: ASSISTANT GENEALOGIST
Avataq Cultural Institute is a non-profit, Inuit organization in Nunavik. The head office is in Inukjuak (Nunavik)
and administrative office in Montreal. The Genealogy program was created in 1988 to provide Geneaology
services to the Inuit communities of Nunavik. The Assistant Genealogist will be supervised and trained by the
Institute’s Genealogist.
We are seeking a dynamic person who will be trained for the following tasks:
- Answer to consultation requests as well as reproduction of genealogical information.
- Update on a constant basis the genealogy data using archival information as well as current lists, entering
- the data on a specialized software.
- Keep updating the vocabulary of kinship, Inuktitut names and nicknames.
- Provide reference on individual name spelling as well as other data for the Institute projects.
- Observe the current policy on confidentiality of information.
- Develop contacts in Nunavik communities for reference purposes.
- Answer to historical questions according to his/her knowledge.
- Inuktitut and English are essential.
- College education or equivalent is an asset.
- Basic computer knowledge: Word, Excel.
- Typing in English and Inuktitut is an asset.
- Communication skills.
- Interest in developing knowledge base in the field of Inuit culture and history.
- Detail oriented, punctual and autonomous.
- The candidate will be trained in FileMaker Pro and Reunion.
Additional information:
- Full time permanent position.
- Salary: $43,100 to $64,600 annual, according to experience and qualifications. Added benefits for JBNQA beneficiaries.
