The municipality of Inukjuak is a municipal body with jurisdiction over the community of Inukjuak located on the east coast of Hudson Bay, in the Nunavik region of Quebec. Full-time

Location: Inukjuak, Quebec        

Hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. - Monday to Friday  

Position: Garage Labourer

Under the dual supervision of the Municipal Services Foreman and the Municipal Garage Manager, the Garage Labourer provides essential mechanical support, maintenance assistance, and shop upkeep for the Northern Village of Inukjuak. The incumbent is responsible for assisting mechanics with repairs, performing routine preventative maintenance, maintaining shop cleanliness, and handling tools and materials to ensure efficient and safe garage operations. 

Responsibilities

• Assist mechanics in executing routine maintenance and repairs on municipal vehicles and heavy equipment, including water/sewage trucks, snow removal machinery, loaders, graders, and pickup trucks. 

• Perform basic preventative maintenance tasks such as oil changes, fluid level top-ups, filter replacements, tire servicing, and battery checks. 

• Help inspect vehicles, tools, and heavy machinery for mechanical issues, physical damage, or safety hazards. 

• Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas inside the garage and surrounding municipal grounds. 

• Strictly adhere to and promote workplace health and safety standards, environmental rules, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements. 

• Properly store, clean, and maintain all garage tools, shop machinery, and municipal equipment. 

• Assist in receiving, organizing, unloading, and stocking incoming mechanical parts, tools, tires, fuel, and sealift supplies. 

• Report missing, worn out, or damaged tools and equipment to the supervisor immediately. 

• Ensure municipal vehicles and garage property are used exclusively for authorized municipal business in accordance with village policies. 

• Assist with shop logistics, vehicle staging, and seasonal equipment readiness preparations (e.g., winterization, thaw period prep). 

• carry out any other related operational or labour duties as requested by the Foreman or Garage Manager. 

Requirements

• Secondary school diploma or equivalent. 

• Practical experience in basic vehicle maintenance, manual labour, or general trade work is an asset. 

• Willingness to learn, undertake further training, and complete required skill upgrading courses. 

• Ability to safely handle basic mechanical tools, shop equipment, and heavy vehicle components. 

• Strong commitment to workplace health, security, and safety procedures. 

• Ability to work effectively in a team environment, communicate respectfully, and take direction from supervisors. 

• Must demonstrate strong personal attributes: reliability, honesty, punctuality, and good work ethics. 

• Must be in good physical condition and capable of performing heavy manual labour, heavy lifting, and standing for extended periods. 

• Comfortable working outdoors in severe Arctic weather and cold conditions when required. 

• Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or willingness to obtain). 

• Ability to communicate in Inuktitut and either English or French. 

Salary: Salary based on experience and salary scale

Benefits: Group Insurance, Group Pension Plan, Northern Allowance, as per set for the Employees of the NV, Travel Benefits of $5,000.00 or $3,000.00 plan after 12 months of service.

Probation: 6 months
