JOB OFFER – General Director

Aaqsiiq Theatre is looking for a new person to bring a strong vision and contribute to the writing of the next chapter of its history. For this position, Aaqsiiq is looking for someone with a management profile and an interest in the arts sector. This person does not have to be an artist, as Aaqsiiq will open an artistic direction committee within the year for the artistic leadership.

ABOUT AAQSIIQ

Aaqsiiq Theatre is a Non-profit Organization dedicated to the development of theatrical practice in Nunavik. The mission of Aaqsiiq Theatre is to produce and present theatre productions that will reflect and enrich the Inuit language and culture. Through its programs and activities, Aaqsiiq Theatre fosters the creation and the production of professional plays, in the meantime developing a significant repertoire in Inuktitut by drawing on Inuit history, myths and legends as well as contemporary Inuit life. The organization aims to share its activities and knowledge with all Nunavik communities and to recruit and train artists in all fields related to the theatre arts, with a focus on our youth well-being and cultural pride.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Aaqsiiq has been collectively run since its foundation in 2019. The General Director is a senior management position responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination and sustainability of Aaqsiiq Theatre. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the General Director is responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the organization, while embodying the collective and collaborative vision of its operations. Responsible for daily operations, financial oversight, fundraising, staff management, and community engagement, the General Director ensures the organization fulfills its mission, maintains fiscal health, and achieves long-term goals which will have been defined following a collective process.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

• Supervise all of the organization’s operations and guide the team members through challenges / support team members if concerns arise;

• Act as the primary spokesperson for the organization;

• Lead the strategic aspect of the organization (action plans, strategic plans, board initiatives);

• Manage the human resources and recruitment process from an Inuit perspective, particularly for the retention and harmony of employees (hires, employee’s requests and-or problems);

• Develop and maintain relations with the partners (Makivvik, Avataq, KRG, NRHBSS, KI, NV, Quebec and Canada public organizations, private funders);

• Orient and review the Annual Budget, the funding applications and reports;

• Lead board meetings and act as a liaison between the Board and the organization’s employees;

• Be available to travel, as requested;

• Perform other related duties within the scope of the position or as requested by the Board of directors.

QUALIFICATIONS :

• Being an Inuk leader with a significant experience in organization management is a requirement;

• Knowledge of and experience working in Nunavik is required;

• Excellent communication skills in Inuktitut and English. French is an asset;

• Strategic thinking and strong ability to combine needs, resources, and vision;

• Strong organizational and time management skills;

• Good understanding of the funding context of Inuit organization;

• Great computer skills : Microsoft Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook etc.);

• Ability to reliably work independently and take initiative;

• Ability to work under pressure and within deadlines;

• Collaborative leadership skills;

• Team management skills;

• Simple accounting and budgeting skills;

• Sense of ethics;

• Self-motivated and able to work in cross-cultural environments.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Full-time (35h/week)

• Workplace: Nunavik and/or Montreal (hybrid mode, telework possible);

• Salary: Starts from $85,800 to $90,000 annually. The Salary scale depends on the experience;

• Benefits:

o Northern allowance ($3,640/year)

o Group Insurance and RRSP

o 12 personal/sick days per year + 8 days traditional leave per year

o Internet compensation

o Vacations: 3 weeks personal holidays + 2 weeks paid during the end-of-the-year holidays.

• Start date: March 2026

The new General Director will be supported by the current General Coordinator to ensure a smooth transition/training period. The current General Coordinator will remain with the organization in a new role as Assistant/consultant to the Director.

SELECTION PROCESS

• First interview (January 2026) - During the first interview, we will seek to learn more about your previous experiences, your vision of Aaqsiiq, what drives and motivates you to apply.

• Exercise (February 2026) - If you are selected for this phase, you will then be invited to conduct an exercise to evaluate your writing, analysis, budget and planning competencies. You will have about two weeks to complete this exercise for which you will receive a compensation of $500.

Prior to this exercise, we will also ask you to provide the names of two to three people with their contact information for reference.

• Final interview (March 2026) - If you are selected for this final interview, you will be interviewed by the Board of Directors about your vision for Aaqsiiq and will be asked to present a plan for your first year in office.
