LOCAL CULTURAL COMMITTEE DEVELOPMENT AGENT
Avataq Cultural Institute is a non-profit organization, created in 1980, dedicated to protecting and
promoting the Language and Culture of the Inuit of Nunavik. The organization has its head office in
Inukjuak, Nunavik, and an administrative office in Montreal.
Avataq has recently reshaped its Language department and is now setting the Uqausirnik
Pijunarsaivik Bureau within the structure of Avataq Cultural Institute. The UPB will work closely
with all the Nunavik Local Cultural Committees.
Avataq is currently seeking for two professional and dynamic candidates for the position of Local
Cultural Committee Development Agent - Hudson Coast and Hudson Straight.
Under the direction of the Director of Local Cultural Committee Development, the Local Cultural
Committee Development Agents will achieve the following tasks:
Responsibilities:
- Develop and formulate a plan to strengthen Local Cultural Committees.
- Implement the Local Cultural Committees legal status and by-laws.
- Advise, motivate, and inspire communities on language, culture and identity issues.
- Seek for local resources on language, culture and identity.
- Keep the Local Cultural Committees informed of all developments and plans being marked
out for the future of Inuktitut language preservation activities in Nunavik.
- Participate in field trips to communities to advance Inuktitut preservation activities and developing programs.
- When required, attend meetings and/or conferences/gatherings relating to their work.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job requirements:
- Experience in management and administrative tasks.
- Knowledge of Inuit culture.
- Master of Inuktitut (written, spoken, syllabics and typed).
- Bilingualism (English is a strong asset).
- Strong writing skills, advanced computer skills.
- Proven abilities in leadership (communication, ability to lead)
- Abilities in organization, planning, logistics, and reporting.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Interest and curiosity about Inuit culture.
- Availability for trainings.
- Availability to travel regularly.
Additional information:
- Permanent, full time.
- Salary between $47,400 and $71,100 – Added benefits for JBNQA beneficiaries.
- Location of work: Hudson Coast and Hudson Straight.
