Kativik Ilisarniliriniq (KI) is a school board offering educational services in the 14 communities of Nunavik.
In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Complementary and Compassionate Services, the Special
Education Technician for the visually impaired will detect, evaluate, and guide students who are visually
impaired or blind and provide strategies and rec ommendations to support their academic success.
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
FUNCTION & DUTIES:
• Support the visually impaired student ’s inclusion in the classroom;
• Instruct student in reading and writing braille and in the use of special equipment or supports such as
human or animal guides, long canes, and other adaptive devices;
• Adapt and implement psychoeducational support in collaboration with student counsellor and SSP that
meets the academic and administrative requirements of the school board;
• In collaboration with school, parents, and external resources , gathering information to assist in the
adaptation of learning and evaluation materials appropriate to assist the students’ learning;
• Collaborate and maintain relationships with internal and external partners to implement and recommend
strategies aimed to assist the students’ learning;
• Organize and conduct training activities for colleagues and students;
• Develop, adapt , and prepare materials as well as appropriate adapt intervention approaches and activities
based on the individual needs of the student;
• Provide recommendations to management staff and teachers through evaluations, briefings, and progress
reports;
• Support student’s integration in regular classes and provide appropriate intervention activities for students
advice and support to school resources in matters pertaining to the integration of students into regular
classe s;
• Refer students to appropriate resources when necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
College Diploma in Special Education.
The Board may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the afore -mentioned qualifications if it finds a suitable
candidate who is a beneficiary of the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement (JBNQA) and who accepts,
as a condition of employment, to follow a training plan determined by the Board.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Fluency in English and preferably a second language of the board (Inuktitut, English and French).
• Two years of relevant experience.
• Prior knowledge of Braille.
• Experience working with the blind.
• Experience working in Nunavik is a definite asset.
WORK SCHEDULE: 35 hours per week from Monday to Friday
CLASSIFICATION / SALARY / BENEFITS:
In accordance with the AENQ collective agreement for support staff, this position belongs to job category 4207 :
from $ 27.71 to $ 39.88 an hour depending on qualification and experience. All benefits are prorated based on
the percentage of the task.
